The area most commonly used by birders, and coincidentally known as Hugh's Hollow is accessed in one of two ways: Hunting Quarter Road, perhaps four miles from the Seneca Creek Crossing, cuts off at a minor angle off River Road and eventually (after a few rough miles) gets to a small parking lot (there are several others along the way) in front of two artificial impoundments. A gravel road, blocked off for visitors, bisects the impoundments and heads towards the river. This is the path that most birders use to bird the area around the impoundments and beyond. Alternatively one can drive farther on River Road, to Hughs Road, and take a left. The road quickly makes another left to the parking lot. (total distance from River Road, maybe a quarter mile) It is MUCH the better route now, as Hunting Quarter Road is in the worst shape I have ever seen it, with washed out sections and pot holes. A genuine third world quality road, surprising in wealthy Montgomery County.
