Beetham" Subject: DC Birds 1/25 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit The marsh and impoundments at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens are frozen solid now, so no water birds were to be found there this morning, except for the Canada geese flying overhead. However there were rather large flocks of sparrows feeding along various portions of the river trail. Among the more common song and white-throated sparrows, I found several fox and swamp sparrows, as well as about 5-10 eastern towhees. There were four brown thrashers foraging alongside the sparrow flocks near the end of the river trail. Crows were out in force today, with at least 50 in and around the gardens, all of which were cawing raucously. Part of the Anacostia near the Metrorail bridge was free of ice, and in that patch there were four male hooded mergansers together with a single ring-necked duck. A later trip to Roosevelt Island turned up an American Kestrel perched on a lamp post next to the GW Parkway and a winter wren on the Virginia shore of the Potomac.
