The C&O Canal is a great place to see them year-round. I've got many dead and decaying trees in my yard, and a pair of Pileateds who visit regularly; the male was extremely tame when young. By the way, last night I dreamed that a bluebird perched in a tree flew down to my hand when I called, then turned into my pet parrot (who in real life would never be that obedient). With dreams like these, do we consult Jung or Audubon?
