An adult Sharp-shiined Hawk kept the birds on their toes, as if the biting cold wasn't enough for them. About 2 PM I looked outside to see a bird I first thought was a female cardinal, but instead, and to my delight, turned out to be a BROWN THRASHER, feeding on the ground, out of the wind, by a whiskey barrel/juniper shrub in the front yard. I got a few digi-scope images just for kicks, as I have never had one at my feeders before. This is a bird that was rather uncommon in all the years of the Montgomery County mid-winter count, though PG County gets them regularly. I can recall only a few in the 9 years we had a mid-winter count, and that is county wide! It could possibly be the same bird that my daughter and I had on the Triadelphia CBC back on Dec. 14, right across the road behind the high school. Neat!
