Our first find was a AM. = KESTREL eating while sitting on a fence post. While we were watching he = slid his prey into the hole where the rails of the fence go. While = doing this his tail was bobbing up and down. Is this usual behavior? = After that we had a great look at a GOLDEN EAGLE. The ducks and geese = were in small pockets of open water so we were able to look at many at = one time. We saw RING-NECKED DUCKS, BUFFLEHEADS, a pair of COMMON = GOLDENEYES, SCAUP, CANVASBACKS, MALLARDS and AM. BLACK DUCKS. We saw a = lone SNOW GOOSE mixed in with CANADAS in one field. We went looking for = the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and found him at the lay-by where Danny Poet = has spotted him. We moved about a half a mile farther on the road, got = out to scan the many sparrows on the road and two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS = flew in. If one of them was the first one spotted he flew very fast. I = would like to say there were three. We ended up the day spotting ALL = WOODPECKERS. We heard two GREAT HORNED OWLS talking back and forth and = spotted both of them. Going back over the bridge to the mainland we were = amazed to see 11 BALD EAGLES sharing the ice with geese and ducks in a = small open spot of water. One eagle was eating a goose, another eating = something we could not identify and all but two watching the eaters. = They were mature and immature eagles. A pair of mature eagles were = nesting on the far shore. The nest was about 10 feet deep. One was = sitting on the nest. The other flew across over the geese and ducks = making them fly. Otherwise the geese and ducks tolerated the eagles = standing on the ice all along one side. It was a great site to see. All = in all it was a good day.
