Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2004 16:51:33 -0500 Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: danny poet Subject: Caroline Co Birds Longspurs and Rough - Legged Hawk Comments: cc: lroslund@bluecrab.org Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Hi all On Sat Afternoon I went to Sparks Road north of Ridgely Md To look for Lapland Longspurs the field that holds the corn fodder had a flock of 100 + Horned Larks in among them were 6 Lapland Longspurs while looking and trying to count the birds a Kestrel few in and landed on some pipes in the field scattering the birds soon to be relocated and in the back section of field some Snow Geese were landing soon to be spooked and were off an adult Bald Eagle few by in the background . All this time a flock of Mourning Dove were sunning and some feeding in the field . I soon noticed a Raptor flying tree top high coming straight at me hovering at a couple of spots .It than veered of to the south to disappear behind some trees . All birds in the field than scatterd and flew deep into the center . It was a Rough Legged Hawk A State bird for Me. Other birds were a covey of about 12 Bobwhite Quail behind the hedgerow they took of when I stopped to photograph a flicker on the ground . Cherry lane Near the campground of Tuckahoe State Park the Road edges Were clear about 3 Ft back exposing fallen sweet Gum Balls These attracted a large number of Juncos, White Throated Sparrows , Some Cardinals And 1 Fox Sparrow and 1 Eastern Towhee . Over in Queen Annes Co on Back Starr Road There was 1 lone American Pipit. On Little Eagle Rd were some Savannah Sparrows mixed with Horned Larks , 2 Song Sparrows, 1 imature white Crowned Sparrow. Greenville Rd had 6 MeadowLarks along the Road edge.
