Highlights included a light phase Rough-legged Hawk flying over Dam #5 road north of Williamstown in the early afternoon. Also, along that road was a flock of about 12 White-crowned sparrows. Other birds of note were two purple finches along Canal Road and small groups of Horned Larks and Am. Pipits in the fields east of Clear Springs; however, no Snow Buntings or Longspurs were seen. Enjoyed many woodpeckers along the canal trail near the Frederick Co. line, including 5 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and two Hairy Woodpeckers. Several Cedar Waxwings and Brown Creepers were also present. Many spots along the Potomac had open water and I was able to view 7 Buffleheads, one Lesser Scaup, three Ring-necked ducks, and numerous Common Mergansers, along with Mallards and Black ducks.
