The lake at = Piney Run is 99% ice-covered but the birds keep part of it open all the = time. Liberty is also largely frozen but there is an open stretch along = the Baltimore County side visible from the end of Oakland Road in = Carroll County. At Piney Run were: Pied-billed Grebe 4 Canada Goose 220 Black Duck 2 Mallard 40 Canvasback 15 Bufflehead 3 Hooded Merganser 4 Common Merganser 2 Coot 40 Ring-billed Gull 30 At Liberty Lake: Canada Goose 600 Black Duck 40 Mallard 80 Ring-necked Duck 5 Bufflehead 3 Hooded Merganser 6 Common Merganser 7 Coot 2 Ring-billed Gull 160 The only other bird of note was a Barred Owl calling from the Field = Trail at Piney Run.
