Barbara and I got there just a bit too late today. When we arrived Jim Stasz, Ed Boyd, and Zach Baer were still there, but the waxwing flock went to roost, out of sight, around 4:30 pm. They know that the large flock was present all day long ... the flock was seen in the morning, even though the Bohemian was not spotted until late in the afternoon. The thinking is that the flock will likely be there all day tomorrow. There are lots of berries on the fruit trees in the nursery on the east side of Rt 18 and there are also lots of natural berries on the west side of the road. The light will be better after noon. The location is near the town of Queenstown, in Queen Anne's County, Maryland. In your DeLorme MD/DE Atlas, it is map 50, in the lower center of block B-1. Total distance from the east end of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is about 15 miles. It will be best to park on John Brown Road just before it Ts into Rt 18. The shoulders are wide there, but not so on Route 18. From this intersection, Jim suggests walking south on Rt 18, about 1/10 of a mile, to the tall cedar tree on the right side of the road. From there you should be able to see the waxwings flying back and forth across the road. They said it was easy to pick up in flight since the 10-20% greater size translates to a much bigger bird in flight. Jim says it looked a lot like a starling in flight, but also resembling a short-tailed catbird in flight, as a grayish bird with rusty undertail coverts. The bird also landed in the top of a tree, offering good looks. The area might be muddy, boots or waterproof shoes may be a good idea. Remember, this is a MD/DCRC reviewable sighting ... written report and/or photos or videos are be welcome. Thanks to Jim Stasz for picking this bird "out of the crowd"! Good luck.
