Then came back through the fields to the impoundments and finally on River Rd. and Sycamore Landing Rd.. Luckily the ground was frozen because once things thaw it's going to be a wet and muddy mess. Compared to last week when it was almost completely frozen the Potomac River was open with high water. Strange day-seemed like birds were scarce, but by the time I finished I had recorded 48 species. Highlights were my first sharpie of the season, 5 Wild Turkeys, at least 225 Ring-billed Gulls flying upriver (my first real sign of spring here, but a little late this year), an adult Great Black-backed Gull, a briefly calling Barred Owl, 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers, 7 Winter Wrens, a male Eastern Towhee (this species has become more conspicuous the last week or so with the snow covering most of the ground), 6 Am. Tree Sparrows, 3 Swamp Sparrows, an immature White-crowned Sparrow, 25 Rusty Blackbirds, and one Purple Finch.
