Years ago before the Voice of the Naturalist was automated it was the secretaries that took down all the phoned in bird reports. At the end of the season these were bundled up and sent to me to sift through for items to use in the season reports. It seems the secretaries knew very little about bird names and recorded some very interesting species. Here are several that I remember: "Ruffling Swallow" - probably hybridized with a shorebird "Bard Owl" - hoot if you read Shakespeare "City Shearwater" - imagine tubenoses flying up and down Pennsylvania Avenue And my favorite - "Bonaparte Skulls" - he must have had a large family; sometimes they were reported in the hundreds Bob Ringler ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
