I have to stop and think "it isn't the obvious name" even after = all these years of birding. It just seems bassackwards somehow. As for the "seagull", I'd rather have a non-birder actually see the bird = enough to call it something than to ignore it. That gives one the = opening to say something like "Oh, yes. That one's a .... gull. You = can tell by...." If one loftily tells a person "There's no such thing!" = it is inhibiting (I've seen it done!) and may discourage someone who = otherwise may come to know the gulls well and to be an avider observer. A little group of us used to joke about "pie-eyed grebes" until a = beginner overheard us and thought that was the bird's name. We suddenly = realized that we need to be a careful about terminology and birding = shorthand, especially around those who are relatively new to the game. = Still, every time time I look at that little grebe, I think "pie-eyed" = and smile.
