In 1995 my husband and I were on vacation in the Anzo-Borrego Desert, 4-wheeling, hiking and birding. I'd only been to California once before, and that was before I was a birder, so I tried to study up on the plane on the flight over by looking at all the names and pictures in my Peterson's Western Bird Guide. One small oasis we hit at the end of the afternoon was particularly birdy. There, flying from a tree to a prominent shrub was a bird that looked like a black Cardinal, which I recognized immediately from the guide. Problem was, the name was a little less easy to recall. "Look!" I cried out, "it's the Spanakopita!"
