Winds were brisk all morning, so smaller birds were hard to find. Matt Barr had an Eastern Phoebe along the woods between the impoundments before we arrived. Yellow-rumped Warblers were present in small numbers, as were Eastern Bluebirds, allowing great scope views for both kids and parents alike. Good views were also had of Ring-necked Ducks and Hooded Mergansers. At least 6 Wood Ducks flew over before landing in the wet woods out of sight. Red-winged Blackbirds were all around and singing. A few woodpeckers were sighted as well; N. Flicker, Pileated, Downy and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Sparrows were present in small numbers and variety; juncoes, White-throats, and Song. Kerry Stone brought along some of her 4th and 5th grade science students, who really seemed to have a good time, despite the cold. My friend Mike Moffatt also joined us. Our next trip is scheduled for Saturday, March 13, and we will head to Riley's Lock along the C&O Canal. In April we have planned a bit of an extended trip to visit Jug Bay.
