I read the whole thing. Question concerning names: were the names Northern Flicker and Yellow-rumped Warbler the names actually used in the 1948 report? If so, these names must have changed around 1948, because Peterson's 1947 field guide (recently refered to in Harry Armistead's marvelous posting) called them "Flicker" (a separate species from Red-shafted Flicker) and "Myrtle Warbler." I used this classic Peterson guide more than three decades ago, and when I returned to birding following a 26-year hiatus, I was under the impression that these name changes were recent. Not so, based on your posting. It is interesting how times change. When I left birding, so many moons ago, my life list was 72 (hard won)species! Today, that would represent a slow day in May. It is interesting that these events took place before even I was born, and Truman was President. Thanks for the historical insights.
