I can remember a winter, maybe 1971, when we had huge flocks of Evening Grosbeaks coming to gorge themselves on sunflower seed which my mother had put out on the picnic table in the back yard. They would descend in hordes and feed voraciously, keeping most other birds away with their raucous noise and behavior. They were right outside the sliding glass doors, perhaps 10 feet away. We had to back up into the dining room to look at them through binoculars! We sure went through a lot of seed that winter! Anything like this up that way recently, or do folks just get small numbers of the birds now? They looked like bright yellow parrots against the white of the snow.
