Our of curiosity, I backtracked to the first edition of the AOU checklist (1895). In that edition, the two species were original placed in Anas (vs. Mareca) and the common names were: Widgeon (no use of the "European" modifier) and Baldpate. I don't have a copy here of the second edition.
