Subject: Red-necked Grebe in DC+ Comments: cc: Shawn Padgett MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit This morning (Sat, 3/6) there was a RED-NECKED GREBE on Georgetown Reservoir in DC. Also there was a male RED-BREASTED MERGANSER (no Ring-necked Ducks, which is what I was really hoping for - but I'll take a R-n Grebe any day). A brief stop along the Washington Channel brought another R-B MERG and 2 COMMON MERGANSERS. Other birds of note over the past week, seen last Sat (2/28) in the company of Bob Ringler included: 4 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS on the back part of Kenilworth Park (may be a DC high count for me). They didn't want to flush, allowing us to get incredibly close as the froze in the sparse grass. RED-HEADED WOODPECKER still at the Aquatic Gardens GREEN-WINGED TEAL on the Anacostia (a little early), along with GADWALL, WOOD DUCK and HOODED MERG at the Aquatic Gardens ORANGE-CROWNED & NASHVILLE WARBLERS continuing at the Arb. The Orange-crowned couldn't have been easier to find this time - it seemed like it was following us around - must have been Bob's rare presence in DC. YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER - at Kenilworth Park, my FOS Breeding behavior of note included copulating KILLDEER at KAG and a pair of RED-TAILED HAWKS displaying overhead at the Arb. And if you missed the posts on VA Birds, the OSPREY are back on the RR Bridge over the Potomac - they returned on Thursday. And over the week there have been a pair of PEREGRINES, also on the bridge. Huge size difference, with the male looking much smaller than normal (versus the female looking too large).
