This was about 4 p.m. Other waterbirds, with estimates for numbers: Pied-billed Grebe--3 Tundra Swan--20 Gadwall--10 Am. Wigeon--25 Am. Black Duck--20 Mallard--50 Canvasback--30 Ring-necked Duck--75 Scaup, sp.--15 Bufflehead--5 Hooded Merganser--50 Common Merganser--100 Red-breasted Merganser--2 drakes Am. Coot--25 Also, on my way back to the car, I hollered out a few Barred Owl calls, and within seconds had a cacaphony of hoots coming from three Barred Owls, all of which landed in the same tree. Got the scope on one of them. Later in the evening at UMBC, an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW (probably my last of the season) was at the Storm Water Managemenet Pond, among a dozen or so Field Sparrows. Also, a flyover flock of 25 TUNDRA SWANs, followed shortly by another whooping flock of about 200 swans brought excitement to the evening sky. As darkness fell, I hooked up with Charlie Kucera, and we were able to hear a few Woodcock displays, and some chattering, but we never heard any peents, nor did we actually see any birds. Yesterday (6 March) I was at Big Pool in Washington Co. to check out the nice collection of waterfowl recently posted by Dave Perry and Lou Nielsen. The scenery changes every day, as I did not see some of the "hoped fors" but saw others in their place. The list: Horned Grebe--3, getting some nice rouge on the face/neck Tundra Swan--76 Wood Duck--3 Gadwall--5 Am. Wigeon--15 Am. Black Duck--10 Mallard N. Pintail--20 Ring-necked Duck--12 Bufflehead--8 Hooded Merganser--14 Common Merganser--12 Red-breasted Merganser--3 drakes Also, in the pine woods across from Ft. Frederick a Barred Owl called spontaneously, but would not return my calls when I answered back.
