September 30, 2004 (Start and = end dates are flexible).This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable w= ork experience on a national wildlife refuge and develop contacts with professionals in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Geological= Survey. Interns will be hired as part of a study of the ecological effe= cts of prescribed fire, including effects on endangered Delmarva Fox Squirr= els and forest-interior dwelling birds. Primary duties will involve: (1) assisting with trapping of fox squirrels; (2) bird point counts; (3) so= me radio-telemetry work; (4) various biological activities and data entry.= Potential candidates will have taken courses in Zoology/Biology/Wildlif= e Ecology. Preferred Qualifications: experience or interest in small mamm= al trapping, birding, bird point count surveys, radio-telemetry, and GIS/G= PS; ability to work independently in forested wetlands with minimal supervision; ability to work in hot, humid, and sometimes buggy conditi= ons; capable of identifying eastern forest birds by sight and sound. Free housing and $200/week stipend provided.
