John Staples had left a message that he and Carrie had = seen Wood Duck there yesterday. Thanks John. I wanted to go at low = tide, so I went this morning around 8 AM. I started at the old Bryans = Road sewerage treatment plant, and hiked to the creek from the south = side. Highlights were: One each male and female Wood Duck in the treatment plant ponds.(#114 = for the big Charles Co year) Four male and one female Blue-winged Teal in the creek. (#115). = Remember female Blue-winged Teal have the white spot at the base of the = bill. This helps distinguish them between female Green-winged Teal = which have the cream colored tail lights, and no facial spot at the base = of the bill. Others birds of note along the way were: 4 Great Blue Heron 55 Canada Geese - migrating over head 55 American Black Duck 2 Mallards (one male, one female) 7 Green-winged Teal (one male, six females) 2 Hooded Mergansers (one male, one female) 2 immature Bald Eagles 1 Greater Yellowlegs 5 Killdeer 2 Red-bellied Woodpeckers Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (calling at house) 3 Hairy Woodpeckers - the males are now competing for the females. = Three at the house also and as active as the birds at the old sewerage = treatment plant. 6 Downy Woodpeckers (at house) 2 Northern Flickers 2 Pileated Woodpecker. I also had a male Pileated Woodpecker at the = house (photographed from close range - I hope I got this one finally = right) 3 Myrtle Warblers 2 Eastern Towhee 2 Field Sparrow 8 Song Sparrow 12 White-throated Sparrow 12 Fox Sparrow - (Also had about 5 at the house.) Lots moving through = the area now. 1 Swamp Sparrow 75 Junco - at the house fattening up for the trip north soon, and=20 3 Rusty Blackbird males at the house today. Still looking for that elusive Eastern Phoebe.
