A sign still proclaims closure of the swamp boardwalk trail until further notice as a result of damage sustained by Hurricane Isabel. However, walkers and joggers were using the trail. Two things stood out during my walk yesterday. The first was the extensive growth of English Ivy that is overrunning the island. Not only is the forest floor covered but many trees are entwined high into the crown. The second was the extensive amount of flotsam that has washed up onto the island during high tides. The debris and trash ringing the island was indeed a sore site. Bird activity was fairly slow. Twenty-four species observed on/around the island to include the following of note: 2-Wood Ducks (male/female pair), 4-Great Blue Heron circling over the swamp, 1-Osprey soaring over the Potomac, 1-House Wren and 2-Eastern Phoebe. Oh, and 2 deer too!
