     Top birds this week are: WESTERN KINGBIRD in DE; PEREGRINE
FALCON, GOLDEN EAGLE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, and possible SANDHILL CRANE in
VA. WESTERN KINGBIRD in DE; and ORANGE-CROWNED and WILSON'S WARBLERs
in DC;

     Other birds of interest include:  COMMON LOON, GREAT CORMORANT,
SNOW GOOSE, TUNDRA SWAN, ducks, rails, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPER, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, BONAPARTE'S GULL, SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, EASTERN PHOEBE, thrushes, YELLOW-RUMPED
WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, and sparrows.

     Two carefully observed WESTERN KINGBIRDs, seen at close range,
were reported along the Boardwalk Trail at Bombay Hook NWR, DE, on Oct
10.  These birds were frequenting the vegetation around the
southernmost of the two ponds crossed by the boardwalk; this is the
pond on your right as you cross the bridge over the narrow neck of
water that connects the ponds.

     A possible SANDHILL CRANE was spotted in flight along the
causeway that connects the mainland with the island of Chincoteague,
Accomack Co, VA, on Oct 11.  This bird was seen flying west from the
area near the new bridge construction and the turnoff to the oyster
beds.

     An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a WILSON'S WARBLER were discovered
near the nature center in Rock Creek Park, DC, on Oct 11.

     Local hawkwatches are reporting some interesting results.  The
hawkwatch at Kiptopeke St Pk, Northampton Co, VA, had a record-
breaking day for PEREGRINE FALCONs on Oct 7, with 367 PEREGRINES
tallied.  Snicker's Gap Hawkwatch, on the Loudoun-Clarke Co line,
tallied single GOLDEN EAGLEs on Oct 11 and 12, and two GOLDEN EAGLEs
on Oct 13--all immature birds.  Also counted at Snicker's were three
NORTHERN GOSHAWKs on Oct 11 and another NORTHERN GOSHAWK the following
day.  The total count at Snicker's on Oct 12 was 204 raptors and, on
Oct 13, 124 raptors; the majority of birds both days were SHARP-
SHINNED HAWKs.  

     Shorebirds continue to be reported, with four AMERICAN GOLDEN-
PLOVERs spotted at Hart-Miller Is, Baltimore Co, MD, on Oct 11.  A
flock of AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERs was also found in a plowed field on
the north side of Oland Rd, Frederick Co, MD, during the week.  Hart-
Miller Is hosted two WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERs and a juvenile BAIRD'S
SANDPIPER on Oct 11.  Another juvenile BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and another
WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were seen at the marina at Millard Tydings
Memorial Pk, at the end of Union Ave, in Havre de Grace, Harford Co,
MD, also on Oct 11. 

     Winter waterfowl continue to arrive, with RUDDY DUCK, RING-NECKED
DUCK, NORTHERN PINTAIL, and NORTHERN SHOVELER among those reported
this week.  SNOW GEESE were noted in large numbers along the coast,
and single SNOW GEESE even turned up in flocks of Canada Geese farther
inland, including a bird in the Harper's Ferry, WVA area, that was
also seen in Washington Co, MD, on Oct 11; another bird on the
mudflats at the marina at Havre de Grace, MD, the same day; and yet
another bird in a small pond on Price Rd, near Darlington, Harford Co,
MD, on Oct 9; 

     Other waterbird arrivals included 170 flyover TUNDRA SWANs and a
single GREAT CORMORANT at Hart-Miller Is, MD, on Oct 11.  A juvenile
BONAPARTE'S GULL was spotted at Conowingo Dam, Harford Co, MD, on Oct
9.  COMMON LOONs are turning up in greater numbers, with 24 birds
tallied at Hart-Miller Is on Oct 11; six birds in the Calvert Cliffs
area, Calvert Co, MD, over the weekend; and smaller numbers of birds
at other locations.  

     SORA, VIRGINIA RAIL, and KING RAIL were all noted at Huntley
Meadows Pk, Fairfax Co, VA, on Oct 7.  SORAs were also found at
Huntley Meadows on the evenings of Oct 10 and 11.

     RED-HEADED WOODPECKERs are still being seen, with the high count
for the week being 15 birds at Sky Meadows State Park, Fauquier Co,
VA, on Oct 11.

     Thrushes reported included GREY-CHEEKED, SWAINSON'S, WOOD, and
HERMIT.  Sparrows attracting birders' attention were WHITE-CROWNED,
WHITE-THROATED, SONG, SWAMP, CHIPPING, SAVANNAH, and FIELD, and DARK-
EYED JUNCOs are being reported in increasing numbers.  Other birds
being seen abundantly include EASTERN PHOEBE, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
and PALM WARBLER.
