Dear Jane, I hope you've figured out the archive! Fran and I spent this morning wandering from pond to pond to lake to turf farm and back to pond again...here's a sampling of what we found (all sightings in Montgomery County): PIED-BILL GREBES on Zion Road Pond, at Black Hill, and on Lake Needwood. A single HORNED GREBE on Black Hill and three together in the Potomac River at Seneca. Waterfowl: CANADA GEESE and MALLARDS everywhere. A gorgeous pair of WOOD DUCK at the boat launch area of Black Hill Park. 4 GADWALL at Black Hill. A female LESSER SCAUP on Zion Road Pond. Largish flocks of RUDDY DUCK on both Zion Road Pond and Black Hill. NORTHERN HARRIER hunting over the old Laytonsville Landfill. At the turf farm just north of Sycamore Landing, up the C&O Canal (honest, ma, we NEVER left the towpath!), at least 200 KILLDEER and a pair of GREATER YELLOWLEGS, along with a lone BROWN CREEPER along the towpath here. At the pond along Sundown Road, a COMMON SNIPE feeding with Killdeer and Mourning Doves along the edge of a muddy field. Along Sycamore Landing Road, a lone female RUSTY BLACKBIRD bathing in a roadside puddle with a large flock of American Robins. Six species of sparrows, including WHITE-THROATED and DARK-EYED JUNCO. If'n you need to chat with me on Tuesday morning, my number is 202-606-5701. Cheers, Norm =============== Norm Saunders Colesville, MD osprey@ari.net
