I (Mark Hoffman) traveled to New Germany SP, Garrett Co., MD today (Sat, 12/6/97) to look for the White-winged Crossbills seen by the O'Briens yesterday. I birded in the vicinity of the New Germany lake from around 0645 to 1345 (joined at 0900 by Jim Stasz, Marshall Iliff, et al.), and we did not see or hear any crossbills. We were able to cover the area throughly several times, but that might not mean much with a species like this. Finches seen or heard were Evening Grosbeak (around 60), Pine Siskin (1) and Purple Finch (1). Jim and I also had a beautiful adult Northern Goshawk at tree level over the edge of the lake, while we were sitting on a picnic table waiting for Marshall to come back with lunch (who says age doesn't count for anything!). One Black Bear as well. Snowed off and on all day with 3-5 inches on ground, icy roads. Let me know if anyone has better luck.
