Hawks on the Mall

By way of introduction, I am a computer programmer (with a background
in biology and ecology) at the Smithsonian Institution. I recently
signed onto this listserv, and am enjoying the contributions. Allow
me to make my first:
I often spend my lunch time walking on the Mall and surrounding areas
such as the Tidal Basin. I will continue to report any oddities I find
during my lunchtime birding. For the present, I should alert people
that the hawk season has begun on the Mall. During fall, winter and
into early spring, hawks of different kinds haunt the Mall. If you are
down here, be alert for flocks of starlings and pigeons suddenly
springing into the air. They may have seen a hawk. During the
last two weeks, I have seen an immature Red-tailed Hawk, an American
Kestrel, and (today) a Sharp-shinned Hawk.
