On Wednesday, December 17, 1997, Rick Blom and Lou Nielson stopped by my office at Liberty Reservoir to check for crossbills. About 1115, we went outside and checked the White Pines. After a few minutes, a few crossbills were heard. Three were seen: 1 male Red Crossbill 1 male White-winged Crossbill 1 female unidentified crossbill The birds were only present for about 5 minutes. No other crossbills were seen through 1300. The Reservoir Natural Resources Office is located at 5685 Oakland Road in Eldersburg, Carroll County. I'm there Monday through Thursday from 8AM to 6PM. Feel free to stop in while I'm there. Unfortunately, the highly nomadic crossbills may decide not to be there. Please note that there are "No Parking" signs along that stretch of Oakland Road except near the end of the road. AFTERTHOUGHT: There is no reason to think that this is the only watershed location where there are crossbills. They could be at any of the pine/spruce/hemlock/cedar locations at either Liberty, Loch Raven, or Prettyboy Reservoirs.
