Thanks to good directions posted here by Marshall and others, and because of regular updates, Tyler and I were able to be in the right place at the right time and got both WHITE-WINGED and RED CROSSBILLS on 12/25/97. We arrived at the reservoir natural resources office area at 9:30 a.m., meeting a birder who'd been there since 7:30 with no luck. We searched the pines for about an hour, then headed to the Deer Park Road area, where we saw Jim Stasz. He had just arrived at the first powerline crossing, so we headed down toward the bridge. We had no sign of any likely birds, so turned around toward Jim's pine ridge. Then Tyler saw a red bird fly high overhead, so we pulled off, and had both crossbills actively feeding in the pines alongside the road. Tyler ran and got Jim, and we watched approximately 45+ crossbills feed. We had at least 6 white-wingeds and the rest reds. Much of the flock scattered, leaving the white-winged crossbills feeding.
