Gary, hi.
I think I ran into you and another fella at the end of the fishing pier at
Cape Henlopen on Sunday morning. I was just coming off the pier, and the two
of you were just heading onto it, when we met and discussed whether or not I'd
seen the King Eider. You told me that you'd seen it on Thursday and Friday
morning, and that you'd seen Red Crossbills back near the observation tower.
My wife and I headed back to the observation tower (by way of the nature
center, rest rooms, etc.) but did not see/hear any crossbills. We may have
been too late...
I did a short walk on a blacktopped path which ran to the left of the
observation tower and found both Red-breasted and Brown-headed Nuthatches in
one pitch pine right off the path. We then headed down the road from the
parking lot near the ob. tower, towards the ocean. Scanning the ocean yielded
only a few more Surf Scoters and a Red-throated Loon. I scanned again near
the fishing pier for the eider before we left for Ocean City around noon, but
did not see it. Hope you had better luck.
