Rob and all--

Greenwell State Park is near Leonardtown, MD, in St. Mary's County.
Take Route 4 to Route 235, for approximately 5 miles north, to Route
245. Turn right on 245 and go about 1-1/2 miles. As you come up a
steep hill, watch for a cleverly concealed sign right at the
intersection for Greenwell--you'll be turning right on to Steer Horn
Neck Road. The airfield is about 1/2 mile along Steer Horn on the
left. BTW, Lisa Lister, Bob Boxwell, and Tyler Bell all tried for
the shrike (at 1 and 3:30 p.m.) with no luck. There's a lot of shrike
habitat along the driveway by the old farmhouse near the airfield and
further along Steer Horn Neck Road (toward the actual park entrance),
so this may take a lot of searching! Jane Kostenko

Hi Jane,

Can you tell me where Greenwell State Park is?

Thanks

a
distinctive call note. Both times it was on the east side of Steer

field).
Back in the early 1970s the Point Lookout Christmas Bird Count
regularly
reported a few loggerhead shrikes from St. Mary's County, but the
species
dropped out of the counts by the 1980s. Could it be making a
comeback?
