Those who have been waiting until later to get to Conowingo Dam to see the Common Gull may be out of luck. It was announced today that at 5:00 p.m. this evening they will be opening 20 floodgates at the dam. This has happened in 3 of the past 5 years and in each case it was the end of gulls at the dam for at least eight months. Two years ago the numbers dropped from 25,000 to 200 overnight and did not rise above 350 until a year later. The flooding of the river apparently eliminates a large part of the fish stock that the birds are dependent on. I will be checking the dam this weekend and will report on developments.
