This morning at dawn I arrived at Pine Knob Road ( 8/10 of a mile east of Rt 32 in Carroll County) , near Liberty Reservior, to look for Crossbills. About 8:00 AM I saw and photographed a flock of 12 White-winged Crossbills, males and females mixed. At one point, three birds perched in a tree right above where I was standing. I was close enough that these photos (taken through a Swarovski scope) should even show the crossed bill ! I should have at least a few good photos, I shot three rolls. Later these same three birds flew to the west end of the pines, perched in a deciduous tree, and eventually dropped down and fed on some red berries (I'm not sure what kind of berries ? ). I didn't see any Red Crossbills, but I had to leave around 9:30 AM. Good Birding Darius Ecker Columbia, Maryland
