On Jan. 17, I covered Back River sewage plant for the Baltimore County
Winter Bird Count with Rick Blom. Our highlights were a Yellow-breasted
Chat, adult Bald Eagle, a Bonaparte's Gull in breeding plumage, and
small numbers of Fox Sparrows and Tree Sparrows. Unlike other parts of
the county the pines here were virtually devoid of birds despite a good
cone crop. The crossbill action seems to have stayed on the Piedmont.
