Hi Folks! Just a little clarification on Eared Grebe status: In March and April Eared Grebes are being found with more and more regularity with Horned Grebe flocks in Anne Arundel, Calvert, and St. Mary's Countys [there are several St.Mary's records since the Yellow Book was printed]. I would not be at all amazed by one showing up in early February, since this is when grebes start congregating along the Bay. Late Summer and Fall records are increasing. Any small non-Pied-billed Grebe should be looked at in August and September...the chances are it is an Eared. Last Fall Marshall Iliff and I found Eared Grebes at the Hurlock Waste Water Treatment Plant in Dorchester [2nd County Record], the Funkstown Waste Water Treatment Plant in Washington [1st County Record] and Rouge Lagoon in Allegany Count [1st County Record]...the later two were on the same weekend trip! The Fall Hot-spot for Eared Grebes in the East is S. Holston Lake in extreme SW VA/NE TN.....I believe the Record Count is 19 birds at one time in Aug/Sept. Marshall has proposed that the MD/DC Records Committee stop reviewing Eared Grebes in Maryland. Good Birding! Jim Jim Stasz North Beach MD jlstasz@aol.com
