Press Release Contact: Sarah Jane Rodman, Special Events Coordinator 301-652-9188 Audubon Naturalist Society BLOOMIN' BIRDATHON Friends of the Audubon Naturalist Society will be counting birds and wildflowers this spring to raise money for the Society's ongoing environmental education and conservation programs in the Chesapheake Bay watershed during the 18th annual BLOOMIN' BIRDATHON. All ages and skill levels are welcome to participate in this popular fundraiser as a counter, a sponsor or both. Counters select one 24 hour period between April 17 and May 17, 1998 and count as many bird or flower species as they see or hear in the field or their own backyard. They ask friends, families and co-workers to be sponsors by pledging to make a donation to Audubon based on their species count. Sponsors also donate prizes and awards and can do a count, too! Kicking off the season will be the Bloomin' Birdathon Orientation on April 16, 1998 at 7:00 p.m. at Woodend. Registration packets and program information will be available. Guests are invited to stay for Audubon's monthly mmembership meeting at 7:30 when Cris Fleming, co-author of FINDING WILDFLOWERS in the WASHINGTON-BALTIMORE AREA will share some of her favorite places right near by. Counters compete for prizes in several categories including first timers, junior, team, back yard and field. Sponsors receive gift premiums based on their contribution level. This year prizes include Audubon thermo-zipper pulls, denim 'BB caps, free tickets to Audubon activities, complimentary memberships, and nature books. The event's finale, the Tally Rally, is set for Thursday eveing June 18, 1998 at 7:30. This festive evening at Woodend will include a dessert reception, awards and stories from the field. Sponsors, counters, friends and family are invited! New birders are welcome at ANS' FREE regularly scheduled birdwalks every Saturday morning September through June. Meet at Woodend in front of the Audubon Bookshop at 8:00 a.m.; walks last approximately one hour. For more information about the BLOOMIN' BIRDATHON, please call 301-652-9188. # # # # #
