This morning Al Spiese and I found the male Eurasian Wigeon at Long Arm Resevoir that Carl Garner first found yesterday. It was still there at noon. Yesterday Carl saw it it at fairly close range from one of the parking lots along Grand Valley Road (there is NO access from the other side of the resevoir). Today, it was right along the shore, in one of the bays on the far side of the resevoir, but we got a good look at it thanks to a 50x scope. Directions: From the center of Hanover, York County, take Route 194 South (Frederick Street), turn left (south) onto Westminster Road, go 2.5 miles (past South Hills golf course on the right), go straight onto Grand Valley Road where Westminster Road makes a sharp turn to the right. The resevoir will be on your right. There are four parking areas along this side of the resevoir. In response to a question about the normal range of Eurasian Wigeon, the normal breeding range extends all across northern Europe and Asia. They winter around the Mediteranean (sp?) Sea and across southern Asia. But they have been showing up fairly regularly in the eastern U.S. in winter and spring. One wintered on a farm pond in Lancaster County for, I think, 8 years until this winter. Another has wintered at a pond at Cape May Point, NJ, for several years. There are 2 right now at Little Creek WMA, Delaware.
