Just to get on the gravy train here...

Jane and I went to T&T several years ago and had the ffrench Birds of
Trinidad and Tobago as well as the Murphy birdfinding book. Both were
excellent on Tobago but the de Schauensee Birds of Venezuala came in
handy on Trinidad. The illustrations in ffrench were not always
excellent, as was commented by a previous poster, but were usable. Some
of the flycatcher pix left a little to be desired for separation in the
field.
You may also want to take along a Peterson's Eastern or National
Geographic for some of the more common birds that also appear in the US.
They are not covered well in ffrench.

If you can, make a layover in Trinidad and have lunch on the veranda at
Asa Wright. The hummers and honeycreepers at arms length make eating
difficult!
