Sunday March 1 brought the first Pine Warblers to our suet feeders -- a pair trilling for the most part of the day. At least one is still here today. Yesterday I observed a pair of Carolina Wrens taking nesting materials into the dwarf spruce by our front walk and today I discovered that the Carolina Chickadees already have about 1/2" of moss in one of the boxes. It seems so early for this activity despite the mild winter. At Flag Ponds (where I have to wear Wellingtons to get around), things are fairly quiet -- still seeing Fox Sparrows but the Yellow-rumps are dispersing. First Pied-billed Grebe of the year was on Duncan's Pond this morning and I counted, sexed, measured and weighed 39 Spotted Salamanders in the traps (I am working on a salamander study there this year). The Spring Beauty and Cut-leaf Toothwort are already starting to bloom! I'm looking forward to the next arrivals -- the Yellow-throated Warblers and the Louisiana Waterthrushes!
