On Thursday, March 5, a friend and I observed a Thick-Billed Murre at Kiptopeke State Park. It was a wintered plummaged or immature bird. We studied it at fairly close range in waters between the shore line and the old ship hulls. At the time, we were concerned that it might be a Common Murre which, after consulting the VSO's Annotated Checklist of June 1987, would have been even rarer. I vaguely remember that someone else posted a sighting of a Thick-Billed Murre in Virginia early this year, either on MDOsprey or Birdchat. Is this possibly the same bird and same location?
