Maryland: Saturday morning (Mar 7)I visited Pine Knob Rd, Carroll Co. around 8:30. Frank Witebski had been there since 6:30 ! Unfortunately, neither he nor I, nor several other observers saw or heard any crossbills as of the time I left, around 9:30. Red-breasted Nuthatches were still plentiful. To the best of my knowledge, the last time they were seen or heard there was Saturday morning Feb 28. Looks like they're really gone. Pennsylvania: Later (Mar7) Gail Frantz and I went up to Middle Creek WMA (north of Lancaster PA). The Snow Geese and other waterfowl numbers and variety seemed relatively low: Perhaps 3-5000 Snow Geese (about 5% blue phase), maybe 50 Tundra Swans, 50 Ruddy Ducks, only 3 Common Mergansers. A Bald Eagle flying over put the Snow Geese into that wonderful mass take-off that is always so spectacular. The pond just across Kleinfeltersville Rd from the main lake had a Shoveller, 5 Ring-necks, 2 Gadwalls, a Bufflehead. -- Steve Sanford Randallstown MD tanager@mail.bcpl.lib.md.us
