Fran,

I have been using AviSys for quite a few years now -- started with the DOS
version that didn't even permit use of a mouse (!). At the time I was using
a very clunky program called AVES and was faced with converting all of my
records from that into AviSys. It took me quite a while and lots of
patience (fortunately I was not much of a lister then or I would have never
succeeded). If you have a lot of records to convert, then AviSys is not the
program for you. I've read rave reviews about Thayer's but understand that
it is slower (see Benchmarks...on the AviSys web site) in some of its
functions than AviSys which runs like lightening on my now aging (all of
three years old) computer.

I was impressed by the fact that Thayer's does offer to convert other
programs into its own format -- a real asset. I don't know about the
support Thayer's offers (or how often you would need it), but AviSys
support is superb.

I also like the way AviSys does Census Reports -- by month, year or 10
year. State checklists are included and you can also create your own custom
checklists for areas that you frequently bird (I have a Flag Ponds custom
checklist created as well as a Calvert County checklist, etc.).

There is a good demo of the features of AviSys on the home page
(http://www.mindspring.com/~avisys), but again, there is no conversion
program, so it is not for those who have huge numbers of sightings in
another program.

Arlene
