Alas, the loon apparently hasn't read this posting. I ran
down to St. George's Island as soon as Tyler called me
with this wonderful information. I didn't get there until
12:10, but there was only one obviously-common loon any
where to be seen. I stayed for 35 minutes, but nothing
else came in to view. We'll try to plan our future trips
down there with up-coming low tides. Jane Kostenko

Ospreyers:

Here's the tide data, for DC, which is probably an hour or so behind St.
Georges Island, for the days that the Yellow-billed Loon:

    tide seen
3/12 (original sighting) 2:25pm Low 3:15-3:45pm
3/14 (Virginia group) 3:45pm Low 3:30-4:30pm
3/22 (Leo Weigant) 8:52am Low 10:00-10:30am

See a trend?! I know, you statisticians will shoot holes in this with
n=3, but....

Today, the tide schedule for DC is:

Low Tide: Tue 1998-03-24 11:08 AM EST 0.41
High Tide: Tue 1998-03-24 4:27 PM EST 3.14
Low Tide: Tue 1998-03-24 11:54 PM EST 0.34
High Tide: Wed 1998-03-25 5:07 AM EST 3.11
Low Tide: Wed 1998-03-25 12:11 PM EST 0.23
High Tide: Wed 1998-03-25 5:27 PM EST 3.27
Low Tide: Thu 1998-03-26 12:46 AM EST 0.17
High Tide: Thu 1998-03-26 5:59 AM EST 3.33
Low Tide: Thu 1998-03-26 1:09 PM EST 0.03
