A quick early lunch walk around the Mall and Tidal Basin produced
the following, among others:
A Double-crested Cormorant flew over the White House.
At the DC Veteran's Memorial a Common Yellowthroat and an Eastern
Towhee were singing, a large flock of Slate-colored (Dark-eyed)
Juncos and Song Sparrows were foraging, as were a Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker and a Brown Creeper (lots of other birds besides).
At the Tidal Basin, my first unquestioned migrant of the spring,
a Northern Rough-winged Swallow. Also at the Tidal Basin, lots of
dead (spawned out?) gizzard shad, and groups of spawning alewives
being attended by schools of bluegill and white perch, likely eating
up the eggs! A very nature-filled walk!
