I saw my first merlin this year at Terrapin Park at 7:45AM today. I got a good look at twenty feet away. He was ten feet up on a small tree which was at the very edge of a large uncut field. For those of you that are familiar with Terrapin Park, he was on the left of the main path to the beach, halfway between the south view blind and the bench near the open marsh. For those of you not familiar with the Park, it is just north on Route #8, the first exit after crossing the Bay Bridge. Take the first left into the industrial park and get on Log Canoe Circle. Going either way you will come to signs for the park. It opens at 7:00am and closes at dark to cars. It is a particularly good place to stop early before going to Horsehead Wildlife Trust which doesn't open until 9:00am.
