Amy and I birded in Worcester County over the past weekend. Saturday was a mess (rain/wind) and Sunday morning was quite chilly. Highlights/arrivals are as follows: Ocean City Harlequin Duck - 10 -(both 4/4 and 4/5), these birds are very cooperative and roost in the "cove" behind the hotel. Walk to the west end of the north jetty. About 4 ad. males, 3 imm. m., and 3 females. Forster's Tern - 60+ fighting the wind on 4/4. Royal Tern - 5+ both days. Blades Road (4/5) Black-and-white Warbler - 1 Yellow-throated Warbler - 6 Louisiana Waterthrush - 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 6 Newark Wild Turkey - 11 (4/4) - These turkeys are very cooperative (i.e. fairly easy to see), so I'll give some directions. Driving south on Rt. 113 from Newark, you will cross railroad tracks and then an intersection with Newark Rd. Pull over to the shoulder on the right (west) side of 113. To the SW is a very large field. You will see a house with four very large white columns with a long driveway as well. Scan the edges of this field (particularly at the woods edge). On the OC CBC I had about 26 turkeys in this field, and 11 on Saturday. Marshall Iliff saw them here a couple weeks ago. If you don't see them from the first spot, continue down 113 to get a better angle on the field, and its various corners and coves. This is private property so don't go wandering off. The turkeys may be quite distant (i.e. over one-quarter of a mile away!), but they are still visible at that distance. Good luck! Mark and Amy Hoffman Mhoff36100@aol.com Sykesville, MD P.S. I have received a report of a male White-winged Crossbill at a feeder in Berlin (Worcester County, Maryland). It is at a private residence.
