On Saturday, April 11, after mowing the yard, I sat and observed the birds in my yard for a while. At my feeders I had a couple dozen American Goldfinches, both at the thistle feeder and the hanging sunflower feeder and not much else except for Tufted Titmouses and Carolina Chickadees. In the yard were a couple of Chipping Sparrows singing, the first I have seen this year, and a couple of Eastern Bluebirds were foraging but showing no interest in a nearby nesting box. I could hear Cardinals and Song Sparrows singing nearby and a Louisiana Waterthrush was calling about a quarter of a mile away on the stream where they nest each year. I think I saw a few Purple Martins but didn't have my binoculars at the time. Later, I saw a Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Closer to dusk, I saw Cardinals, Song Sparrows and White-throated Sparrows under the feeders.
