OAKLAND, MD. - The electric utility that owns Deep Creek Lake said Wednesday it has accelerated its schedule for selling the popular Garret County resort lake and its hydroelectric dam.
Initial bids are due June 24 and final bids by Oct. 15, with the winner or winners selected by Nov. 20, GPU Inc. said in a statement. GPU previously had planned to conclude the process by Dec. 30.
The Garrett County Commissioners and lakeside landowners have indicated they will bir djointly for the lake, possibly in conjunction with Paul C. Rizzo & Associates, an independent Pennsylvania power company that wants the hydroelecttric plant.
Gov. Parris Glendening has informed GPU of the state's strong interest in the 3,900-acre lake, which is managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
GPU, based in Morristown, N.J., is selling its 26 power plants to focus on electricity distribution.>
