This is the Conowingo Dam report for April 24, 1998. Coverage was by Rick Blom from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Warm, light breeze. Eight flood gates open, water very high. Double-crested Cormorant 150+ (see below) Black-crowned Night-Heron 13 (see below) Great Blue Heron 100+ (see below) Osprey 16 (nest building) Bald Eagle 2 (adults) SPOTTED SANDPIPER 3 (arrival) Caspian Tern 4 Northern Parula 5 Louisiana Waterthrush 1 OVENBIRD 1 (arrival) Standard residents. It was not birdy. There are at least four active Black-crowned nests. Two had birds incubating and two were still under construction. The Great Blue Heron colony is very active. Two of the cormorants, perched in the trees on Bird Island (second island down the river), spent a few minutes handing a stick back and forth but no evidence of nest building was apparent and eventually they just dropped it. Nesting has been anticipated here for several years and should be checked for regularly. Also flying: Spicebush Swallowtail 3 Red Admiral 1 Zebra Swallowtail 6 Clouded Sulphur 2 Orange Sulphur 1 Cabbage White many Eastern Tiger Swallowtail 1 "Lack of education is an extraordinary handicap when one is being offensive."
