The Howard County Bird Club had a great field trip to Lake Elkhorn Sunday morning, May 3. Birds seen were Horned Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Mallard, Ring-necked Duck, Turkey Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, Kildeer, Solitary Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper, Mourning Dove, Chimney Swift, Belted Kingfisher, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Eastern Kingbird, Tree Swallow, Northern Rough- winged Swallow, Barn Swallow, Blue Jay, American Crow, Fish Crow, Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, House Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Wood Thrush, American Robin, Gray Catbird, Northern Mockingbird, Cedar Waxwing, European Starling, White-eyed Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, American Redstart, Common Yellowthroat, Scarlet Tanager, Northern Cardinal, Eastern Towhee, Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, Brown-headed Cowbird, Orchard Oriole, Baltimore Oriole, House Finch, American Goldfinch, and House Sparrow. In addition, as we were leaving the parking lot after the trip we had an Osprey soaring overhead. Darius also had Common Loon and Eastern Phoebe on his way to the field trip. Many thanks are extended to the wonderful group of twenty-one (yes 21) fellow birding enthusiasts who attend the trip.
