Yellow-crowned Night Heron

About noon today I went to the Sligo Creek site to look for the YC Night
Heron and was successful. The site is 0.15 miles south of the
intersection with Piney Branch Road. The marker I would use is the foot
bridge on the left that crosses the creek. Where the asphalt of the foot
path makes a right turn, just off the road, high above in the sycamore
tree is where the nest of the bird is.

Drive down another 1/2 mile and there is a right turn where you can loop
back by going around a little circle. As you back track, on the right,
just beyond the site where the bird nest is, there is a pull off. I
found that the view of the bird from this angle is partially obscured by
leaves. A better view is had by going south on the foot path about 50
yards and walking along the path-side of the guard rail. I used a scope
and had good views when the bird was standing and preening. What I
noticed is that when the bird was sitting in the nest the insects would
cause the bird to move. These movements can be used to spot the bird.
